Let’s talk sweet cherries, DARK sweet cherries to be exact.
I grew up in a little town in Northern Michigan, very close to Traverse City, or “The Cherry Capital” as it’s commonly referred to. As the name suggests, Northern Michigan is filled with some of the most beautiful cherry orchards you’ll ever see.
A family friend happens to own many of these orchards, and I was lucky enough to get to tour them while I was home recently!
Talk about GORGEOUS.
And I apparently came home at just the right time, because the farmers had just begun harvesting the dark sweets. One of my absolute favorite types of cherries!
Huzzah!
Cherries always remind me of a treat that my Dad used to make for my siblings and me every summer, when he would bring home quart upon quart of these little beauties…
*DARK SWEET CHERRY SHAKES*
Now, my Dad always used regular vanilla ice cream for these shakes, but I’ve adapted them here to be dairy free, using a coconut milk vanilla ice cream instead. And I promise that they still taste just as (or even more) creamy and filled with cherry flavor as the original!
What’s so great about using fresh dark sweet cherries, is that they lend a good amount of natural sweetness and a serious amount of cherry juice. The cherry juice is what makes these shakes SO delicious and easy to make, because you don’t need to add any additional coconut milk to thin them out!
This shake packs a serious flavor punch, comes together in 10 minutes or less, and requires only 2 ingredients!
It’s definitely become my quick go-to dessert (or snack) in the summer, and I hope it becomes yours!
